Mr Ceil Bothwell was recently elected Councilman in Ashville, NC. But there's a problem. Because of an archaic provision in the NC Constitution preventing anyone who is an atheist from holding office, Ceil Bothwell, an atheist, is getting some national attention right now. One of his detractors, H.R. Edgerton, a former Asheville NAACP president, is threatening to take the city to court for already swearing in Bothwell. Mr H.R. Edgerton, known for standing in the streets decked out in a Confederate soldiers uniform and holding a Confederate flag, states that: "My father was a Baptist minister. I'm a Christian. I have problems with people who don't believe in God." Hopefully Mr. Edgerton realizes that the US Constitution supersedes a state Constitution before he makes a fool of himself and takes this to court.
Nevertheless, this entire situation makes you question the wisdom of always electing people who call themselves "Christian." We heard "born again" President GW Bush say that God TOLD HIM to invade Iraq. We hear how "born again" elected officials commit adultery. We see how some officals cheat, steal, and spread lies that lead the country into bloody, illegal wars. We see famous, hypocritical Christian evangelists and people "of the cloth" get involved with drugs, sexual adventures including sex with children. Being an atheist does NOT always equal immorality....Just like being a Christian does NOT always equal holiness.
Critics of Cecil Bothwell cite N.C. bar to atheists
