Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi has a proven history of human rights abuses and terrorist activities. So I can understand the protests that greeted him in NY. His rambling speech at the UN was described as "radical" and "crazy"... But his words should NOT have been a surprise or shocking! He expressed what many in the Middle East have been thinking and saying all along.. for YEARS.
Americans should have listened carefully to the interesting and questionable issues he pointed out in his speech. He mentioned the U.S. has a history of violent in-fighting amongst ourselves. For example...the Civil War. Gaddafi said the world community should sit back and ALLOW the Iraqis to fight out their OWN "civil war." After-all, real "democracy" doesn't happen over night.
But like Gaddafi, many in the world community, have been questioning America's DEFINITION of "democracy." They say it seems Americans believe "democracy" can only be spread around the world through some sort of perceived "holy" and "noble" means...by our powerful military strength. They say that Americans act like we want to "free" people by freeing them of their lives. Unfortunately this thinking has created MORE terrorists.
There is nothing wrong with attempting to understand our perceived "enemies," in order to NOT be surprised by them..... the NEXT time.
