There are more contractors operating in Iraq and Afghanistan than uniformed personnel. Between 25,000 and 30,000 of our contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan are armed private security contractors. These individuals do not operate within the traditional military chain of command; they answer to corporate CEOs, not a uniformed commander. They are, furthermore, not subject to the same rigorous standards of vetting, behavior and conduct as are members of our armed forces. This lack of oversight is troubling given that contractors are quite capable of damaging the credibility and security of our military through their reckless and violent behavior.
